Chapter 10 - The Child on Paper
Victor could not erase childbirth.
He could alter custody.
Three months after David’s death, Laura signed documents authorizing Victor to manage estate matters. Hidden among them was a petition claiming David had fathered Emma with an egg donor under a private surrogacy agreement.
The donor listed was Caroline Cross.
The record was absurd.
It was also notarized, sealed, and backed by a falsified fertility-clinic file.
Victor planned to argue that Caroline was Emma’s legal mother and had transferred parental rights to him before her “death.”
If Laura was declared unfit, Victor would claim custody through Caroline.
“He built two paths,” Marlene said. “Institutionalize Emma or claim her.”
“Can it work?”
“Not if we expose the fraud.”
But exposing it required Caroline.
She had to appear, admit identity fraud, and explain how Victor used her name.
Caroline refused to surrender until the leak inside the investigation was found.
Lena narrowed access to the case.
Within hours, a confidential safe-house address was searched remotely from a state computer.
The login belonged to Lena’s supervisor.
He claimed his credentials were stolen.
No one knew whom to trust.
Marlene moved Laura, Emma, Maggie, Daniel, and Sophie to an old lakeside retreat owned by a women’s legal nonprofit. No address appeared in public records.
For three days, they lived in a weathered cabin with mismatched furniture and one unreliable heater.
It was the safest Laura had felt in years.
Not comfortable.
Safe.
There was a difference.
Emma and Sophie played cards at the kitchen table. Daniel repaired the porch steps. Maggie cooked too much food and complained about the stove.
Laura watched her family form around the damage Victor caused.
Sophie did not ask Emma to call her a sister.
She simply remained available.
On the fourth morning, Caroline arrived.
She was fifty-four, with silver threaded through dark hair and the same scar beneath her chin as Sophie.
Mother and daughter stood ten feet apart.
Caroline cried first.
Sophie did not move until Caroline said, “I did not leave because I stopped loving you.”
“You left me with him.”
“Yes.”
The word carried no excuse.
Sophie crossed the room and slapped her.
Caroline accepted it.
Then Sophie fell against her and sobbed.
Later, Caroline gave Marlene the missing final file.
It did not merely contain fraudulent custody documents.
It contained photographs of Laura sleeping, medical records, copies of her journal, and notes on which friends might believe Victor.
One page listed “pressure points.”
Emma.
Daniel.
Maggie.
David’s guilt.
Another listed “end-stage options.”
Guardianship.
Residential placement.
Accidental fall during storm.
Laura read the final line twice.
Victor had planned the kitchen attack for the night of the flood warning.
He expected Laura to be sedated.
He expected Emma to witness her fall.
The pepper spray and the open 911 line disrupted the plan.
Emma had not simply defended her mother.
She had interrupted a murder.
Caroline also brought a recording of Victor explaining the plan to Nolan.
It was enough for attempted-murder charges.
Lena arranged a secure transfer to federal investigators.
Before the handoff, the retreat’s power went out.
Daniel looked through the window.
Two vehicles came down the gravel road without headlights.
Marlene reached for her phone.
No signal.
Someone had disabled the nearby tower.
Lena drew her weapon.
“Everyone away from the windows.”
Emma moved beside Laura.
Two fingers rose unconsciously in Laura’s mind.
The signal.
But Emma was already watching the rear door.

“Laura, I only want my family.”
