Chapter 07 - The Hidden Files

Priya Anand's investigation deepened over the following month, uncovering details that transformed the case from a story about one violent night into something considerably larger and more calculated.

"I want to show you something," Priya told Nathaniel and Isabelle, arriving at the house with a considerably thicker folder than her previous visits. "We found additional records connecting Gerald to Silas Odum that go beyond the initial boat sabotage."

"What kind of records," Nathaniel asked.

"Insurance policies," Priya said. "Gerald took out a considerable life insurance policy on you, Nathaniel, eight months before the accident. The payout, combined with the company transfer, made your death worth an extraordinary amount to him financially."

Isabelle felt sick. "He planned this for eight months."

"Longer, potentially," Priya said. "We're still tracing the full timeline. What I can tell you with certainty is that this wasn't a moment of panic or opportunism. This was patient, deliberate planning, executed with considerable care to avoid exactly the kind of scrutiny that might have caught him at the time."

Nathaniel sat back, absorbing the full weight of just how thoroughly he'd been targeted, a calculation that had apparently begun long before that storm, long before he'd ever suspected his son-in-law of anything beyond ordinary ambition.

"There's something else," Priya said carefully. "Something I think you both need to be prepared for before we move forward with formal charges."

"What is it," Isabelle asked.

"Silas Odum," Priya said. "The contractor who modified the hull. We located him three weeks ago, living under an assumed name in a coastal town two states away. He's agreed to testify, in exchange for immunity, given that he was hired to perform the modification without being told the full extent of what it would actually cause."

Isabelle's hands trembled slightly. "He's willing to say, on record, that Gerald hired him."

"He's willing to say considerably more than that," Priya said. "He kept records of his own, apparently as insurance against exactly the kind of situation he eventually found himself in, worried Gerald might eventually try to silence him too, the same way he'd silenced your father."

Nathaniel felt a specific, cold understanding settle over him, the realization that his own survival, and Odum's decision to keep those records, had likely been the only two accidents of caution in an otherwise carefully executed plan.

"When can he testify," he asked.

"Formally, within the month," Priya said. "I want to be thorough about how we present this. Gerald's legal team is going to fight every single piece of this evidence as hard as they possibly can, given how much he stands to lose."

"Everything," Nathaniel said quietly. "He stands to lose everything."

"That's precisely why I need both of you fully prepared for what comes next," Priya said. "This is going to become public. Considerably public, given the size of Kane Grand Hotels and the public profile Gerald has built over the past eight years. I want you both ready for exactly how much scrutiny this family is about to face."

Isabelle thought of Charlotte, finally sleeping through most nights now, finally learning to trust the quiet safety of her grandfather's house, and felt a fresh wave of protective fear at the thought of dragging her daughter through a public legal battle this significant.

"Will Charlotte have to be involved," she asked. "Publicly, I mean."

May you like

"I intend to protect her from that as completely as legally possible," Priya said. "Her statement regarding what she witnessed that night may be needed for the criminal case, taken carefully, privately, by a specialist trained in exactly this kind of interview. Beyond that, I'll do everything in my power to keep her out of the public proceedings entirely."

Isabelle nodded, grateful for that assurance, though she understood, watching her father's grim, determined expression across the table, that the coming months were going to test all three of them in ways none of them could fully anticipate yet.
