NO MIRACLE ON COMMAND

## CHAPTER 11: NO MIRACLE ON COMMAND

Clara refused to cry until she was alone.

Then she discovered alone had become difficult to find.

Dana waited outside the clinic room. Marla sat beside the wheelchair, silent. Toby hovered near the wall with a granola bar he had not opened. Bianca stood by the sink washing mascara off her hands because she had cried and hated that she had done it near Julian’s cameras.

Clara looked at all of them.

“I need five minutes.”

Dana nodded. “Outside the door.”

Marla nodded too.

Toby hesitated.

“I said five.”

He opened his mouth, closed it, and left.

Good.

Obedience could be love if chosen by the person who had power to stay.

Clara sat in the rehab room alone.

The parallel bars gleamed under fluorescent light. The mirror showed her in the wheelchair, knees still trembling under sweatpants, blue whale socks crooked at the toes.

She hated the socks less now.

They looked ridiculous in a room that wanted tragedy.

Her phone buzzed.

A headline.

WESTBROOK HEIRESS FAILS WALKING TEST AFTER WEDDING DISRUPTION

Fails.

As if walking were a quiz she had not studied for.

She threw the phone onto the padded floor.

Not hard enough to break.

Hard enough to hear it land.

The door opened a crack.

Toby’s voice came through.

“I’m not coming in.”

“That is coming in with sound.”

“Fair.”

She almost smiled.

Almost.

“My first real rehab day,” he said through the door, “I moved one toe. My mom cried so hard a nurse thought someone died.”

Clara stared at her feet.

“One toe?”

“Big toe. Left. Ugly little twitch.”

“And then?”

“Then nothing for thirteen days.”

She swallowed.

“Did you think it was fake?”

“Yes.”

The honesty settled beside her.

Not comforting.

Useful.

Toby continued. “My mom drew a star on the calendar anyway. I yelled at her because it felt stupid.”

“What did she say?”

“She said stupid hope was still better than professional despair.”

Clara covered her face with both hands.

Her body hurt.

Not only legs. Shoulders, wrists, pride, throat. Hope had made her ache in places hopelessness had numbed.

The door opened wider.

Toby stood there, not entering fully.

“You don’t have to stand today.”

“Everyone saw me fail.”

“No. Everyone saw your dad schedule a miracle like a dentist appointment.”

A laugh escaped her.

Small.

Wet.

Angry.

Bianca appeared behind him.

“That line is unfortunately excellent.”

Marla joined them, eyes red but steady.

Clara lowered her hands.

“I thought if I stood, it would all be true.”

Marla shook her head.

“It’s true whether your knees cooperated or not.”

Dana stepped into view.

“The chair data is true. The records are true. Calder’s notes are true. Toby’s file is true. Your father’s media strategy is true.”

Clara looked at the parallel bars.

“And my body?”

Dana’s voice softened.

“Your body is not a witness for the prosecution.”

Clara closed her eyes.

That was the first sentence all day that reached the place Julian had been pressing.

May you like

Toby looked at the press outside and said, “They want a miracle because miracles don’t need witnesses.”
