The Lawyer's Call

Chapter 04 - The Lawyer's Call

Marisol Diaz answered on the first ring, her voice carrying a specific, careful urgency that Evelyn had rarely heard from her attorney across their considerable working relationship.

"I need to tell you something significant," Marisol said, "and I need you to remain as calm as possible while I explain it, because I think you're going to need your composure for what happens next."

"Tell me," Evelyn said.

"A federal investigator contacted my office this morning," Marisol said. "Army CID, working alongside the FBI's financial crimes division. They've been building a case against Ryan for nearly eight months, regarding an investment fund he's been operating."

"What kind of fund," Evelyn asked, though something cold in her stomach had already begun anticipating an answer she didn't want to hear.

"A veteran support trust," Marisol said. "Marketed specifically to military families, Gold Star spouses, wounded veterans receiving settlement payments. He's been promising guaranteed returns considerably above market rate, using your rank and reputation as implicit credibility, even though you were never involved in the fund's operation or aware of its existence."

Evelyn felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her, the specific vertigo of understanding her own hard-earned reputation had apparently been used, without her knowledge, to defraud people she'd spent her entire career trying to protect.

"How much money," she asked, voice barely steady.

"The investigators estimate over four million dollars," Marisol said, "collected from approximately sixty families over the past three years. I want you prepared, Evelyn, because this is going to become public very quickly, and your name is going to be attached to it regardless of your own lack of involvement."

Evelyn sat with that number, feeling something considerably heavier than the morning's earlier violation settling over her, the specific horror of understanding her own husband had built an elaborate fraud scheme on the back of exactly the community she'd devoted her entire adult life to serving.

"Is Linda involved," Evelyn asked slowly, thinking of her mother-in-law's frequent, unexplained trips, her position on the board of a military family charity Evelyn had always assumed was simply philanthropic.

"The investigators believe so," Marisol said. "Her position on the Veterans Family Alliance board apparently gave Ryan access to victim contact information and considerable credibility with potential investors who trusted the organization's reputation."

Evelyn closed her eyes, understanding now the full, devastating shape of what had actually been happening inside her own household for years, invisible to her, hidden behind ordinary domestic routines and small, cumulative cruelties she'd mistaken for simply a difficult marriage.

"When are they planning to move on this," she asked.

"Today," Marisol said. "This morning, actually. Special Agent Diego Salazar is leading the investigation. He's already coordinating with base security given your family's on-post housing arrangement. I wanted you to hear this from me first, before it happened."

Evelyn thanked her, hung up, and sat in silence for a long moment, Farrah watching her carefully from across the office.

"What did she say," Farrah asked gently.

"Ryan's been running a fraud scheme," Evelyn said, voice hollow. "Targeting military families. Using my name to make it credible. They're arresting him today."

Farrah's expression shifted through shock, then a specific, protective fury on her friend's behalf.

"Today," Farrah repeated. "As in, right now."

Evelyn's phone buzzed again, this time an alert from the base's security system, notifying her of federal agents requesting access to her on-post housing.

"I think it's already happening," she said quietly.
