Chapter 13 - The Wedding

A year after Beatrice's sentencing, Adrian and Claire married in a small, intimate ceremony at a coastal property considerably removed from the penthouse where everything had nearly ended so violently, the specific location chosen deliberately for its distance from the family's more painful history.

Vivian served as Claire's maid of honor, the two women having grown genuinely close over the preceding year of shared investigation and rebuilding.

Detective Farrah Nasser attended as an honored guest, having become, over the course of the case, something closer to a trusted family friend than simply the investigator who had uncovered the full truth.

"I never expected to become part of your family's story quite this personally," Farrah told Adrian, during the reception. "I'm genuinely glad this case ended somewhere this hopeful, given how devastating the truth actually turned out to be."

"I don't think we'd have gotten here without your thoroughness," Adrian said. "I'm grateful you took Claire's account seriously from the very first night, instead of assuming my mother's calm composure meant she must be telling the truth."

Claire, dancing with her new husband later that evening, thought of the black lacquer table, of the specific terror of that night, and felt a complicated grief mixing with her genuine joy, understanding that healing rarely arrived as a clean, complete resolution, but rather as this, ordinary joy built carefully alongside grief that never fully disappeared.

"I keep thinking about how close it came to going differently," she told Adrian, resting her head against his shoulder. "If Desmond had succeeded in keeping that camera footage erased permanently. If nobody had ever taken my account seriously."

"But they did," Adrian said. "You did the bravest thing, telling the truth immediately, even terrified, even uncertain if anyone would believe you over my mother's composed denial."

Claire nodded, grateful, understanding that the specific courage of that single sentence, whispered from beneath a table while a camera's light died above her, had ultimately unraveled years of buried murder and fraud that might otherwise have remained hidden indefinitely.

Detective Ostrander, retired now but still consulting occasionally on cold cases, attended the wedding as well, having formed his own unexpected friendship with Adrian over the preceding year.

"I carried that unresolved suspicion about your father's brake lines for three years," he told Adrian, during a quiet moment at the reception. "I'm grateful I finally got to see it resolved properly, even though it took considerably longer than any of us would have preferred."
