The Freeze

Chapter 09 - The Freeze

Grace's emergency motion moved faster than anyone expected, granted by a judge within hours given the explicit threat Vivienne had made on the record.

By evening, Bennett Manufacturing's accounts, along with the personal accounts linked to the shell vendor companies, were formally frozen pending investigation.

"She won't be able to move a dollar without it being flagged now," Grace said, relaying the news over the phone. "This buys us the time we need to build the full case properly."

Sophie felt something like relief settle over her for the first time all day, the immediate danger of Vivienne destroying evidence or hiding assets finally addressed.

That evening, back at Daniel's house, she found herself unable to fully relax despite the good news, the weight of the day's confrontation still sitting heavy in her chest.

Daniel found her on the back porch again, the same spot they'd talked before everything had accelerated this quickly.

"You did well today," he said, settling into the chair beside her. "Staying steady through all of that couldn't have been easy."

"I kept waiting to feel triumphant," Sophie admitted. "Instead I just feel exhausted. And a little sad, honestly, which surprises me."

"Sad how."

"She's still the only family I have left," Sophie said quietly. "Whatever she's done, some small, stupid part of me still grieves the version of her I wanted to believe was real, growing up."

Daniel nodded slowly, not rushing to fix the feeling or argue her out of it.

"That makes sense," he said. "Grief doesn't always wait for someone to deserve it before it shows up."

Sophie looked over at him, something warm moving through the exhaustion.

"Thank you for not trying to talk me out of feeling that," she said. "Everyone else today wanted me to just feel vindicated. It's more complicated than that."

"Most real things are," Daniel said.

They sat quietly for a while, the evening settling comfortably around them.

"Can I ask you something else," Sophie said eventually.

"Of course."

"This past week," she said carefully, "working alongside you, talking with you like this—it doesn't feel like just a business arrangement to protect your loan anymore. At least not to me. Is that just me, or—"

"It's not just you," Daniel said, cutting in gently, something soft entering his usually composed voice. "I've been trying not to acknowledge it, given everything else happening. It didn't feel like the right moment."

"Maybe it's not," Sophie said. "But I'd rather acknowledge it honestly than pretend I don't notice it."

Daniel reached over, careful, giving her every chance to pull away if she wanted to, and took her hand.

"When this is finished," he said, "properly finished, not just legally resolved but actually behind you—I'd like to see where this goes. Without a debt or a crisis standing between us."

Sophie felt something in her chest loosen that had been tight since long before the storm, since long before Vivienne, maybe since her parents had died and left her alone with someone who'd never actually protected her the way family was supposed to.

"I'd like that too," she said quietly.

They sat together in the comfortable dark, hands linked, the frozen accounts and pending investigation feeling, for just this one evening, like something manageable rather than overwhelming.

*Quiet moment, finally earned rather than stolen in the middle of chaos.*

Sophie's temporary phone buzzed once, softly, on the table beside her.

A text from Renata: *She knows the accounts are frozen. She's furious. Be careful.*

Sophie showed Daniel the message, and his expression sobered slightly, though his hand didn't leave hers.

"We knew this part wouldn't be gentle," he said. "But we're ready for whatever she tries next."
