Chapter 06 - Evelyn's Defense
Evelyn Mercer retained an attorney within forty-eight hours of leaving Nathan's house, a confident, expensive woman named Patricia Holt who immediately began constructing a defense built around the specific, familiar architecture of reasonable discipline and a distraught father's overreaction.
"My client used a brief, non-harmful cooling-off period to address her granddaughter's behavioral issues," Patricia told Detective Castillo, during the formal interview at the police station. "This is consistent with her generation's understanding of appropriate discipline, however outdated that understanding may appear to contemporary parenting standards."
Castillo, unmoved, laid out the medical documentation from Dr. Reyes's examination alongside Lily's own recorded account of four to five separate incidents over five months.
"Repeated confinement of a child inside a chest freezer is not discipline by any generation's standard," Castillo said. "It's child abuse, and the medical evidence documenting sustained exposure effects over multiple incidents makes any characterization of this as a single, brief misunderstanding considerably difficult to sustain."
Evelyn herself, present for the interview, maintained the same composed, controlled exterior she'd carried in the garage doorway, offering her account with a specific, practiced calm that struck Castillo as rehearsed rather than genuine.
"Children need boundaries," Evelyn said. "My son's marriage fell apart because his wife never provided any structure for that child. I was simply providing what was missing."
"By locking a seven-year-old inside an appliance designed to reach sub-zero temperatures," Castillo said flatly.
"For brief periods," Evelyn said. "Never long enough to cause actual harm."
"The medical records disagree," Castillo said. "Dr. Reyes documented symptoms consistent with repeated cold exposure, not a single, brief incident. Your granddaughter's own account describes a sustained pattern, not a one-time misjudgment."
Evelyn's composure held, though Castillo noticed, watching carefully, the specific micro-adjustments in her posture that suggested the evidence was landing considerably harder than her exterior was willing to show.
Nathan, informed of his mother's defense strategy through Castillo, felt a fresh wave of fury at the specific, calculated language being used to reframe what he'd witnessed that night in the garage.

"She's making it sound reasonable," he told Castillo. "That's what she does. She takes something genuinely terrible and frames it in language that makes you wonder if you're the one overreacting. She's been doing it my entire life."
"I know exactly what she's doing," Castillo said. "And I intend to make sure the evidence speaks considerably louder than her framing."
