Chapter 10 - Todd's Desperation
Within days, word reached Grace that Todd had been visiting several of the tenants who'd given statements, attempting to convince them the situation had been "blown out of proportion" and suggesting they might want to reconsider their involvement before things "got complicated for everyone."
Priya called Grace directly, voice shaking slightly.
"He came by yesterday," she said. "Told me he could make things difficult for my lease renewal if I didn't walk back what I told your attorney. Said he still had connections with the building even without his job."
Grace felt fury rise sharp and immediate.
"He has no authority over your lease anymore," she said firmly. "None. And what he just did is a serious problem for him, not for you. I want you to write down exactly what he said, as soon as possible, while it's fresh."
"I'm scared," Priya admitted. "What if this doesn't actually protect me the way you're saying it will?"
"I promise you," Grace said, "what he just did makes his situation considerably worse, not better. Please, document it. This matters."
After the call ended, Grace immediately contacted Reyes, relaying what had happened.
"This is significant," Reyes said, once she'd explained. "Attempting to pressure witnesses into recanting statements constitutes witness intimidation, which is a serious escalation beyond the original harassment pattern."
"Can we do anything about it immediately," Grace asked.
"I'll draft a formal complaint documenting this specific incident right away," Reyes said. "In the meantime, please reassure Priya that her lease and housing security are entirely unaffected by anything Todd claims otherwise. I'll also send a formal cease and desist to Todd directly, making clear that any further contact with tenants regarding this matter will result in immediate legal action."
That evening, Grace visited Diane, needing the steady comfort of her neighbor's company after the tension of the day.
"He's getting desperate," Diane observed, once Grace had relayed the situation. "That's usually what happens once people like him realize the consequences are actually going to stick."
"I'm worried about Priya," Grace admitted. "She's already scared enough without him adding new pressure."
"She has you now," Diane said gently. "And an attorney taking this seriously. That's considerably more support than any of us had before you bought this building."
Grace felt a small measure of comfort in that, though the worry didn't fully dissipate.
*Quiet moment: Grace and Diane sitting together in comfortable silence, an unlikely friendship that had solidified rapidly over these past few weeks, built on something more substantial than proximity, forged instead through shared vulnerability and mutual protection.*
"I never expected buying this building would turn into something quite this involved," Grace admitted. "I thought I'd just quietly fix the ownership situation and move on with my life."
"Some things," Diane said, "turn out to require more of us than we initially planned for. That doesn't mean you made the wrong choice. It just means the choice mattered more than you realized."
Grace nodded slowly, appreciating the wisdom in that more than she could easily express.
"Thank you," she said. "For being someone I can actually talk through all of this with."

They sat together for a while longer, the evening settling comfortably around them, Todd's desperate attempts at intimidation feeling, for the moment, considerably less powerful than the steady solidarity building between the building's actual residents.
