What Helena Hid

Chapter 10 - What Helena Hid

Samuel asked for five minutes alone.

Maren gave him three.

They stood outside the library near the book return slot while winter air moved between them. Across the street, reporters gathered in clumps, phones raised, waiting for another piece of pain to become content.

Samuel stared at the photograph of Helena's grave on Maren's phone.

"She hid me," he said.

"I know that part."

"No." He rubbed both hands over his face. "She hid more than that."

Maren folded her arms against the cold.

The strange thing about discovering a father was that it did not erase the father who raised you. It only made every wound more crowded.

"Tell me."

Samuel looked toward the street. "When Helena found out she was pregnant, Roland wanted a paternity test before you were born. He said he wouldn't raise another man's child. Then he changed his mind. Overnight. He claimed he loved Helena too much to shame her."

Maren's laugh came out bitter. "That doesn't sound like him."

"Because it wasn't love. It was leverage."

Samuel reached into his coat and removed a folded paper. It was old, the creases soft from years of being opened and closed.

"Helena sent this to me after you were born."

Maren unfolded it.

It was a copy of a trust amendment.

The language was dense, legal, almost boring until she reached the highlighted sentence.

If Roland Vale contests Maren Vale's status as heir or beneficiary on the basis of paternity, all Helena Vale voting interests shall transfer irrevocably to Maren Vale upon her thirtieth birthday, outside Roland Vale's trustee control.

Maren looked up.

Samuel said, "Your mother trapped him. If he denied you, he lost power. If he claimed you, he had to live with the truth."

"So he chose power."

"He chose power and called it fatherhood."

Maren closed her eyes.

The pain was not clean. Part of her hated Roland. Part of her remembered him teaching her to ride a bike badly, losing patience, then buying her a new bicycle because apologies were easier when delivered by staff. Part of her remembered waiting at school plays for a man who sent flowers instead of attending. Part of her still wanted him to have loved her without needing a clause to make it useful.

"Why did Simone say you hated my mother?"

Samuel's mouth tightened. "Because Helena made one more decision. One I didn't forgive for a long time."

Maren waited.

"She stayed with Roland."

The words landed softly and broke something anyway.

"For me?"

"For you. For the company. For employees. For reasons that were noble and reasons that were fear. People want women in impossible marriages to make clean exits. They don't understand how much architecture is built around the cage."

Maren looked through the window at Tessa, Callum, Noah, Evelyn's face on the laptop.

"Did she love you?"

Samuel's eyes filled, though his voice remained steady.

"Until the day she died. That was the cruel part. Love survived everything except access."

Maren covered her mouth.

A news alert flashed on her phone.

SIMONE VALE TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AT FAMILY FOUNDATION.

Below it, another message from the unknown number arrived.

She will say Samuel stole more than money.

Maren's stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Samuel's face changed.

Before he could answer, Evelyn opened the library door and stepped outside with Maren's laptop in her hands.

"You need to see this."

On the screen, a live feed showed Simone standing before a blue backdrop bearing the Vale Family Foundation seal. Her face was composed. Her pearls were perfect. Roland stood beside her, pale but present.

Dorian Vex hovered at the edge of the frame.

Simone leaned toward the microphones.

"Our family has chosen privacy for years regarding a painful chapter involving Samuel Reed," she said. "But because Maren has placed our private matters before the public, the truth must be addressed. Mr. Reed did not simply steal from Vale Meridian. He exploited Helena Vale emotionally, financially, and personally."

Samuel went still.

Simone continued.

"We have reason to believe Maren is being manipulated by a disgraced man seeking revenge against the family that showed him mercy."

Reporters shouted questions.

Then Simone looked directly into the cameras.

"And we are prepared to release evidence that Samuel Reed may have contributed to Helena Vale's death by pressuring her during her final months."

Maren's blood went cold.

Samuel whispered, "No."

Roland stared straight ahead.

Not proud.

Not shocked.

Ashamed.

Maren saw it.

And so did Simone.

She touched Roland's arm as if comforting him.

But her fingers dug in like a warning.

Evelyn muted the feed.

"Maren," she said, "we need to move faster."

Noah's phone rang. He listened for ten seconds, then looked at Maren.

"The district attorney's office wants the Helena recording. Today."

Maren turned back to the live feed.

Simone was smiling now.

May you like

She had not stepped into daylight by accident.

She had brought gasoline.
