Mr. Halloway's Unease

Chapter 03 - Mr. Halloway's Unease

Mr. Halloway's office sat above a pharmacy in town, three rooms of old wood, paper files, and windows that rattled when delivery trucks passed below.

He placed both wills on a felt-covered table.

Sophie sat opposite him with the green ledger closed beside her.

Tyler stood near the window.

Robert had not come.

"He said his attorney advised him not to participate," Tyler said.

Grace snorted softly.

Halloway adjusted his glasses.

"The will read at the house is physically convincing."

"What does that mean?" Sophie asked.

"Correct paper. Correct witness formatting. Correct signature placement."

"But not correct terms."

"No."

He opened the hidden will.

"This version matches my memory."

Tyler turned from the window.

"You don't remember the document you read this morning?"

"I remember drafting a joint inheritance structure."

Halloway pressed one palm against the table.

"I remember Eleanor insisting you both have equal operational authority."

"Then why did you read the other one?"

"Because it came from my sealed estate packet."

Sophie rubbed the cork she had brought from the cellar.

"Who delivered that packet?"

"My office prepared it. Robert picked it up yesterday at my request."

Tyler looked at him.

"Why him?"

"He offered to organize the reading logistics. I saw no reason to object."

Grace spoke from the doorway.

"You do now."

Halloway looked older again.

"Yes."

He opened a file drawer and removed a paper copy labeled FINAL.

The page count differed from the morning will.

Sophie leaned closer.

"Twenty-one pages."

"The one read was nineteen."

Halloway compared the bequest section.

His copy named Sophie and Tyler jointly.

It also contained the clause excluding Robert.

"This is the hidden will," Tyler said.

"Substantively, yes."

"Then the document this morning was altered."

Halloway sat back.

"Or substituted."

The distinction did not help.

Sophie looked at the witness lines.

"Are these signatures real?"

"They appear to be."

"Can pages be changed after signing?"

"If someone retained signed signature pages and replaced internal pages, yes."

Grace crossed her arms.

"That is what happened."

Halloway lifted one hand.

"We need evidence."

Sophie opened the green ledger.

Numbers filled each page in Eleanor's compact handwriting.

Dates. Amounts. Account references. Robert's initials.

Halloway frowned.

"What is this?"

"She titled it for the years Robert thought she wasn't counting."

Tyler moved closer.

The first entries began almost nine years earlier.

Consulting payments.

Property strategy fees.

Private reimbursement.

Each line carried a checkmark and a note.

No report.

No invoice.

Not approved by Grace.

Sophie rubbed the cork faster.

"Did you know about these?"

Halloway shook his head.

"I handled estate matters, not operating accounts."

Grace pulled out a chair.

"I've seen some of these vendor names."

"Which ones?"

"Whitmore Strategic Partners. RKW Advisory."

Tyler stared at the initials.

"Robert Kenneth Whitmore."

No one corrected him.

---

That evening, the tasting room was empty.

The public opening had been canceled for the week.

Sophie sat at the long oak bar with the 1978 bottle resting on a towel nearby.

It had survived without a scratch.

Grace had placed it there after the cellar cleanup began.

Sophie turned a cork between her fingers.

The room still smelled faintly of spilled wine from downstairs.

Eleanor's stool stood near the register.

Its left rung had been repaired with a strip of copper wire years ago. She refused every offer to replace it.

Sophie touched the seat.

Three years of working beside Eleanor had trained her to notice pressure points.

A late irrigation line.

A cellar temperature drifting by two degrees.

A supplier who suddenly needed payment in cash.

Yet she had missed her grandmother preparing for betrayal.

The loss reached her in pieces.

Not tears.

Not yet.

Just the absence of a hand reaching for the same ledger, the same glass, the same worn corkscrew.

Grace placed two mugs of tea on the bar.

"You should go home."

"This is home."

"The main house is home."

"No. That's where everyone argues."

Grace sat.

"Eleanor used to say the cellar was where the truth improved with age."

"That's not how fermentation works."

"She knew that."

Sophie smiled.

Then the smile disappeared.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she didn't want you fighting Robert while she was alive."

"She left me fighting him after."

"She left you proof."

The distinction mattered.

Not enough.

Sophie touched the 1978 bottle.

"I almost opened this."

"Tonight?"

"Ten minutes ago."

Grace looked at the bottle.

"Wrong reason."

"I know."

They sat quietly.

A truck passed on the county road outside.

The tasting room glass trembled.

Halloway called at nine thirty.

His voice was tight.

"I found the archived drafting files."

Sophie put him on speaker.

Tyler joined by phone from a motel near town. He had refused Robert's offer to stay at the main house.

Halloway continued.

"My physical copy matches the hidden will. My digital file does too."

"So the morning version was fake," Tyler said.

"Altered, yes."

"Who had access?"

"I'm building that list."

Sophie rubbed the cork edge.

"How many people?"

"Three office staff. Myself. Eleanor. And Robert, once he collected the sealed packet."

Tyler said nothing.

Halloway added, "There is another problem."

"What?"

"The envelope seal on the packet was intact this morning."

Grace frowned.

"Then he resealed it."

"Possibly."

"Can that be tested?" Sophie asked.

"Yes."

Halloway exhaled.

"I also found a note in my file. Eleanor asked that the safe copy be treated as controlling if any dispute arose."

Tyler's voice came rough.

"She expected this."

"She expected a challenge."

Sophie looked at the 1978 bottle.

"Not a substitution?"

"I don't know."

The distinction pressed against her thoughts.

Someone had access to the estate packet.

Someone had reason to divide Sophie and Tyler.

Someone knew the real will excluded Robert from control.

Halloway lowered his voice.

"The version read this morning did not come from my final file."

May you like

Sophie closed her hand around the cork.

Someone had altered the will between Halloway's office and Eleanor's living room.
