Caroline's Calm

Chapter 06 - Caroline's Calm
Caroline received the news of the search warrant with the same unsettling composure she'd displayed at the diner, standing in the living room doorway while detectives moved carefully through the house, cataloguing cleaning products, collecting samples, photographing every cabinet within Lily's reach.
"This is a considerable overreaction," she told Daniel, arms crossed, voice carrying the specific, controlled irritation of someone more concerned with the inconvenience than the accusation itself. "A child had an allergic reaction to something in a diner soup, and somehow this has become a full criminal investigation into our household."
"It wasn't an allergic reaction, Caroline," Daniel said, his voice considerably harder than it had been in any conversation with his wife over the past eight months. "The toxicology report confirmed a corrosive substance, deliberately introduced. I need you to understand I've seen the report myself."
Something flickered behind Caroline's eyes, gone before Daniel could fully identify it, replaced immediately by a fresh wave of carefully performed indignation.
"And you believe I had something to do with that," she said. "After everything I've done for this family. After stepping into a mother's role for a child who wasn't even mine, while you were traveling constantly for work."
"I don't know what to believe yet," Daniel said. "That's precisely why the investigation needs to happen properly, rather than either of us deciding the answer based on assumption alone."
Detective Choi, overhearing the exchange from the kitchen, made her own careful notes regarding Caroline's specific choice of words, the emphasis on inconvenience rather than concern for the child's safety, the subtle redirection of the conversation toward her own sacrifices rather than Lily's wellbeing.
The search yielded several cleaning products containing compounds consistent with the toxicology report, unremarkable in a household this size, though Choi noted carefully which cabinets showed evidence of recent access and which had gone untouched for months based on dust accumulation and product freshness.
"I want financial records too," Choi told Daniel privately, once the search had concluded. "Life insurance policies, any trust arrangements connected to your daughter, anything that might establish a motive beyond simple cruelty."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten at the specific direction that request implied.
"Lily's mother," he said slowly, "set up a trust before she died. For Lily specifically, managed by me until she turns twenty-five. Caroline has no direct access to it."
"Does Caroline know the specific terms of that trust," Choi asked.
Daniel considered the question carefully, trying to remember exact conversations from early in his marriage to Caroline, conversations that had felt, at the time, like ordinary financial transparency between spouses.

"She knows it exists," he said slowly. "I don't know exactly how much detail she understands about the terms, or what happens to the trust's structure if something happened to Lily."
"I'd like to find that out," Choi said. "As quickly as possible."
